Introduction

One can either use the common TKDL search or the separate searches provided in the individual systems of medicine i.e. Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Yoga. The user can either enter search terms or can select from the help menu. The search can be carried out in five international languages including English, Spanish, German, French and Japanese by selecting language from the drop-down menu.

The following five types of independent searches are available:

  1. Quick search

  2. Simple search

  3. Advance search

  4. TKRC search

  5. IPC search

Quick Search

This is a non-comprehensive search criterion and can be used to identify whether or not a particular keyword is available in the TKDL database. It is available only for individual systems of medicine and not on the global search page.

  •           Checking the local names checkbox will show the content of the formulations with local names.

    ·         Clicking on any formulation from the search result displayed will open the detailed formulation.

    ·         The searched terms will be highlighted for clarity.

    ·         Use of special characters (~!@#$%^&) in the search text box is not allowed.

    ·         Clicking on the Keyword Help will display a list of the potential terms to assist in identification (Plants/Animals/Metals and Diseases).

Steps for using Quick Search

     Simple Search

The search text is to be entered in the text box provided on the search page and this may include Keywords (list of ingredients such as those of plant, animal, and mineral/metal origin), Diseases, and IPC Codes. The words may also be selected directly from the corresponding Help Menu by clicking on them. At the simplest, the query can be a single word or phrase.

·        Operators may be used to search multiple terms.

·        Operators "AND", "OR" and "NOT" are supported.

·        Search on multiple keywords without Boolean operator will yield results same as if ‘AND’ is used.

·        Search using keywords within quotes will yield results wherein the words appear as is. E.g., “sweet preparation”

·        While typing in keywords, type "OR" between the search terms to find all instances of either one word or another. For instance, pistacia OR fever.

·        English Names and Common Names may be selected directly from the Keyword Help Menu provided.

·        When search terms are directly selected from Help Menu, the search term will appear within quotation marks, and OR will automatically appear if a second search term is clicked.

A complete search query may contain search terms simultaneously including Keywords/ TKRC Code/ IPC Code/ Title/ Diseases/ Bibliography, each individually specified. Keywords include list of ingredients of plant, animal and mineral/metal origin used in any formulation.

·        Terms to be searched may be entered into text boxes provided or selected from the corresponding help menus.

·        Single term can be searched.

·        For help in appropriate keyword search, the relevant Help may be used. It provides a complete list of the terms, disease, title, IPC code or bibliography used in the database including ingredients of plant, animal or mineral origin. Local names and Sanskrit, Tamil or Urdu terms as they appear (in diacritical) may be used directly.

·        Disease Help provides a list of all the diseases or symptoms as specified in the ancient texts. Some of the diseases as expressed in the texts may not be the same as the modern terminology while some may be expressed in the form of symptoms. A correlation with modern equivalents has been established and is available. The Disease Help will facilitate locating suitable terms.

·        The IPC help may be used where necessary. The IPC Code Help provides a description for each code.

·        Each formulation is given a title. This may also be used as the search term. Use the Title Help to select the title.

·        Use Bibliography Help to select search terms since they may be depicted in diacriticals.

·        The 'with local name' box when checked will give results along with the local names.

·        To search using local names with Keyword Help, tick the check box labeled 'with local name'.

·        Select OR to obtain results containing both search terms - e.g. curcuma OR cough will give all the formulations containing either curcuma or cough.

·        Select AND to obtain results containing both search terms - e.g. gulma AND atisāra will give all the formulations containing both gulma and atisāra.

·        Use the drop down menu of 'knowledge is known since' to see the formulations on the basis of the time period selected. For instance, 500 years will display all instances of formulations, which fulfill the search criteria and are 500 years old.

·        IPC help comprises IPC codes that have resulted from concordance with the terms in TKDL database
